Guitar

My History With Guitar

My love for music all began when I got my first guitar at age 10. My father got me an Esteban signature acoustic/electric guitar to explore as a hobby. He didn't know that playing guitar would become one of my greatest passions in life. I began taking lessons at the local music store where I was taught how to play songs by AC/DC, Metallica, Oasis, Led Zeppelin and more.

After learning how to play tabs, I soon started playing much more interesting songs in different genres and styles, not to say that I didn't retain my love for the classics. One of my favorite things to do as a child was to try to play along to songs on the radio by ear. I developed an intuitive sense for how music was structured but, there were still gaps in my knowledge that I needed to fill.

In 2010, I began receiving classical guitar lessons from Charles Fergusson of Stanford University. This is where I developed much of the technical skill needed for playing guitar. I was taught how to read music and the importance of an engaging enthusiastic teacher.

As my education continued, I learned advanced theory and musicianship skills from Jane Jackson of Oxford University. In these classes I developed the theoretical skill needed to compose, analyze, and execute any music I could possibly want to play or learn.

After my formal education, I began playing guitar for a plethora of bands around San Francisco and made a permanent mark on the music scene. As my skills increased with each band I joined I soon found myself writing and composing my own guitar music to be played live in my own bands and projects.

To this day, I still have a fond love for guitar and have multiple projects where guitar takes center stage.

What You Will Learn

Every Student Is Unique

When it comes to guitar, every student has different talents, skills, and aspirations. With this in mind, my goal as a teacher is to bring out a student's innate abilities and improve on areas which need reinforcement.

I teach all my students how to have a great understanding and application of fundamentals such as harmony, rhythm, melody, scales, key, analysis, style etc. but, what is most important to unearth is the why behind the music.

What drives a student to wish to express themself through guitar? In my experience, once a student understands the why behind playing guitar, all the pieces start to come together. It's one thing to know how to play a variety of chords, but what is most important is learning how to use them effectively to derive a sense of undeniable emotion.

I could just tell you all of the technical skills I can teach you as a music teacher but theory is just understanding the tools we musicians use to build music. I will teach you how to use them in the context of the musician's journey to help pave your own road to greatness.
