Drums And Percussion

My History With Drums

My history with drumming began when my best friend moved away to Colorado in 2009 and left behind his drum kit in my garage. At the time, the only thing I knew how to do was a standard 4/4 rock beat, you know, the one you've heard in every Foo Fighters song in history. Through time and dedication spent at my Tama kit, I learned how to keep time, manipulate subdivisions, play polyrhythms, coordinate limbs, and keep things interesting on the drums.

In 2012, my interest in playing metal music peaked. A few years earlier, one of my friends showed me how to play a blast beat, the foundational beat of metal music. Being that the drums are a very physically active instrument with a high return rate of satisfaction, I fell in love.

Soon after, I would become the drummer of a local death metal band where I learned how to make the most of my double bass pedals through playing along to some of my favorite bands.

In college, my skills for drums became more refined as I learned from Afro-Cuban percussionist legend John Santos and local Jazz heavyweight Kurt Moore. I would spend my afternoons becoming more and more literate and aware of the possibilities of what can be done with drumming.

After college, I kept learning more and more about how to get the most out of drumming including how to use rudiments and how to have better and better control over dynamics.

Fast forward to the present, I am still playing the drums, practicing, and learning more and more each day I spend on them. My curiosity for them is ever growing as I listen to more and more ways drumming is expressed in different styles of music.

What You Will Learn

Before the era of modern music, a conductor was relied on to keep time for symphony orchestras, ensembles and choirs. While conductors are still necessary for certain styles of music, drummers have effectively phased out conductors as time keepers but, as you may already know, drumming is more than just keeping time.

Drumming is the foundation or the backbone of most kinds of music created today. A drummer can make or break the sound of any band. In these lessons, you will learn not only how to keep time but how to play effectively in the style you choose to learn.

You will learn foundational grooves and beats from a variety of styles in multiple time signatures and how to use rhythm and technique to add your own special spice to it.

You will learn how to practice effectively to make the most of the time at your kit as well as learning to be conscious of pulse, the implied, underlying tick that informs the percussionist how to place notes and how to know where you are in the music.

Drumming is one of the most fun disciplines that I teach because, to me, drums are one of the most exciting things to play. Whether you're new to drumming and just trying to play a beat or you're a seasoned veteran trying to get the most out of your playing or further develop your own unique style, these lessons have something to offer you.

Whether it's hip hop, funk, jazz, punk, rock, metal, blues, grunge, R&B, drum and bass, indie or anything else you might be trying to master, I've got you covered.
